p style=MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt As people in the US struggle over the current administrations health care policy one country has embarked on an ambitious plan to bring health care to its citizens. On August 10, 2011, South Africarsquo;s parliment approved a new national health insurance plan. It is possibly one of the nationrsquo;s most comprehensive pieces of legislation in its history. Now South Africans will be able to access health care much easier and be able to get the treatment they would otherwise be unable to afford. /p/p

p style=MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt class=MsoNormalDubbed the National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme, this plan is slated to begin a pilot phase in 2012 in ten selected areas, and will gradually roll out to the rest of the country by 2026. /p p style=MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt class=MsoNormalIn 2010, the African National Congress estimated NHI would cost the nation 128 billion rand ($18 billion) in its first year. By 2020, the National Health Insurance scheme would cost South Africa 267 billion rand ($37 billion).these are daunting figure when you consider that South Africa is still struggling to shake off the oppression of Apartheid. One would need a a href=http://www.r4dscards.com/R4 3DS/a card just to be able to work with the figures being thrown around. /p p style=MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt class=MsoNormalSouth African Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan stated the plan would be funded through sources such as tax revenue, mandatory employer contributions, and individual co-payments for medical services not included in the basic health insurance plan. Additional plan funding sources include partnerships with the private sector as well. /p p style=MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt class=MsoNormalCurrently, over 80 percent of the nationrsquo;s 50 million people rely on public health facilities. These facilities are overburdened and in dire need of funding and improvement. /p p style=MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt class=MsoNormalNHIrsquo;s approval has been delayed in the past by concerns over costs and the effect on the private health care industry. /p p style=MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt class=MsoNormalHealth Minister Aaron Motsoaledi stated that the plan was not aiming to replace private health insurance. People who wish to buy private insurance may still do so, but they will also need to make contributions to the national health insurance fund as well. /p/p
