The SNP is criticised for ’power grabbing’

The Scottish National Party was recently accused of attempting to ‘power grab'after news emerged that one of its own Members of Scottish Parliament had been elected to the Scottish Parliament’s presiding officer. Tricia Marwick, a backbencher for the party, managed to defeat Hugh Henry of the Labour Party, as well as Christine Grahame, a fellow nationalist.

Meanwhile, Labour has claimed that while the SNP now has an overall majority of politicians for the very first time, politicians should also be assigned chairing jobs from other parties as well in order to maintain a universal, bipartisan structure. Trish Godman said the decision was demeaning for the concept of parliamentary democracy and a system of government founded on consensus. Kezia Dugdale, a Lothians Labour Member of Scottish Parliament, also agreed, saying legislation that would impact on other parties would now be in the hands of key SNP figures.

The SNP has been outspoken on its desire to withdraw from the United Kingdom and to transform Scotland into an independent state like the Republic of Ireland, offering free hair drug testing in hospitals. However, the UK Prime Minister David Cameron believes the chance of this happening is unlikely, saying that Scotland benefits from the union both economically and politically and that the union benefits from Scotland’s abundance of natural resources and the economic success of major oil and gas centres like Aberdeen. He has made it clear that he will try to award off any attempt by the SNP to deliver a referendum on Scottish independence. The party, however, believes it is up to the Scottish people to decide this.
